Radon is a naturally occurring, cancer-causing radioactive gas. Its presence in your home can pose a danger to your family's health. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America.
Radon is produced by the normal decay of uranium, an element that is found in almost all soils. Radon can also be present in well water. However radon in water is a small risk compared to radon gas entering your home from soil.
Radon gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless and impossible to detect without a test. There are many inexpensive do-it-yourself radon test kits available through retail outlets and on-line. If your home has a radon level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air or more, you should take steps to fix your home and reduce the radon level.
More information regarding radon can be found on US EPA and California Department of Health Services websites.
