Carbondale Bridge over Willow Creek at Forest Home:  Beginning in June 2024, Amador County Transportation and Public Works began replacing the Carbondale Road bridge over Willow Creek near Forest Home Road.  The project includes the removal of the existing bridge structure and replacing it with a new bridge structure with a wider deck and improved railings.  The roadway alignment will remain unchanged; however, the new roadway profile will be raised approximately four feet.

Consolidated Engineering, Inc. of Valley Springs is the contractor performing the work.  During the bridge replacement, Carbondale Road will be closed to all traffic at the project location.  A detour sign was placed to direct traffic around the project site.

As part of the project, the culvert at Forest Home Road will be replaced.  That work will not occur until the new bridge structure is open to traffic.

Bridge Replacement Projects - 3 Bridges:

Fiddletown Road Bridge: The Fiddletown Road Bridge, constructed in 1923, is a 32.8-foot long, 2-lane concrete arch bridge that spans over North Fork Dry Creek.  The project is to remove the existing structure and reconstruct with a bridge to provide pedestrian and vehicle access.  Currently, the County is completing right-of-way and permitting.

Old Amador Road Bridge: The Old Amador Road Bridge, constructed in 1925, is a 65-foot long, 2-span bridge that spans over Rancheria Creek.  The project is to remove the existing structure and reconstruct with a bridge to provide pedestrian and vehicle access.  Currently, the County is completing the environmental review and design.

Bell Road Bridge: The project will replace the existing structurally deficient bridge, constructed in 1925.  The roadway at the bridge will conform to the existing roadway at approximately 400-feet from each side of the bridge.  The new bridge would accommodate one 12-foot wide travel lane and two 2-foot wide shoulders.  Currently, the County is completing environmental review and design.

SR 88 Pine Grove Corridor Improvement Project:   In December 2023, bids were received for the SR 88 Pine Grove Corridor Improvement Project.  The project consists of roadway improvements to SR 88 from Ridge Road to just east of the Pine Grove Elementary School.  The primary components of the project are as follows:

  • Widening SR 88 to provide 8-foot shoulders and 12-foot lanes from Ridge Road to just past Pine Grove Elementary School.  
  • Relocation of egress from Pine Grove Elementary School onto Pine Grove Volcano Road.
  • Signalization of the SR 88/Pine Grove Volcano Road intersection.
  • Providing a new pedestrian crossing near the Pine Grove Town Hall, just east of Irish Town Road.
  • Constructing new sidewalks along SR 88 from Ridge Road to Pine Grove Elementary School.
  • Adding on-street parking near Town Hall.
  • Improving bus stops along SR 88.

 However, all bids received were substantially greater than the available project funding and therefore were rejected.

 Staff was directed to scale back the project to fit the available funding.  The main components of the scaled back project are as follows:

  • Relocation of egress from Pine Grove Elementary School onto the Pine Grove Volcano Road.
  • Signalization of the SR 88/Pine Grove Volcano Road intersection.
  • Providing a new pedestrian crossing near the Pine Grove Town Hall, just east of Irishtown Road.

 It is anticipated that the scaled back project will be out for bid in Fall 2024 with anticipated project construction to occur in 2025.

 Upper Ridge Road Improvements Project:   Amador County has secured funds in the amount of $2,300,000 for repairs and safety improvements along Upper Ridge Road, a 3.04-mile section of road from Climax Road to Highway 88 in Pine Grove.  This funding is through the Priority Legislative Budget Project administered by the California Department of Transportation.  Engineering design of the improvements is slated to be completed by the end of 2024 with construction of the improvements anticipated to occur in 2025.

Completed Projects:

Slope Stabilization Project:

Beginning in May 2024, Amador County Transportation and Public Works completed the slope stabilization projects at locations damaged in the 2017 winter storms.  JPB Design Inc. of Orangevale was awarded the contract to repair damaged roadside slopes along Sutter Creek Volcano Road at Post Mile 8.1 and along Pioneer Volcano Road at Post Mile 1.44.  The slopes were stabilized using rockery walls and geosynthetic reinforced embankments.  

2024 Dig-Outs Project:

Amador County Transportation and Public Works Department hired George Reed, Inc. to perform sections of pavement  replacement on Martin Lane and Irish Hill Road. The project consisted of roadway excavation, placement and  compaction of hot mix asphalt pavement for small and large existing roadway sections and pavement delineation 

Main Street and Spanish Street (Drytown) Improvement Project:  

In October 2023, Amador County Transportation and Public Works hired Consolidated Engineering to perform pavement improvements to Main Street and Spanish Street in Drytown.  The project on Main Street began at the intersection of SR 49 and extended approximately 400 feet to the east.  The project on Spanish Street began at the Main Street intersection and extended approximately 700 feet to the north.  The project included the removal and replacement of the existing pavement.

Shenandoah Road Rehabilitation Project:

In June 2023, Amador County Transportation and Public Works hired Doug Veerkamp General Engineering to perform reconstruction work on Shenandoah Road.  The project began at approximately one-half mile south of the southerly Shenandoah School Road intersection, and extended to the intersection of Steiner Road/northerly Shenandoah School Road intersection (including the intersection).  The project consisted of the removal of the existing pavement, the establishment of a new road base utilizing a Full Depth Reclamation with Cement (FDR-C) process and the placement of new asphalt pavement.

Buena Vista Road Improvement Project

In September 2022, Amador County Transportation and Public Works Department hired George Reed to perform reconstruction work on Buena Vista Road on a one-half mile section immediately east of Coal Mine Road.  The project included full-depth reclamation (FDR) of the road section, placement of hot mix asphalt and regrading of the roadside ditches.

County Roads Dig-Outs, Shake Ridge Road

In November 2022, Amador County Transportation and Public Works Department hired QA Constructors to perform sections of pavement replacement on Shake Ridge Road.  The project began at approximate Post Mile 0.95 and ended at approximate Post Mile 7.65.  The project consisted of roadway excavation, placement and compaction of hot mix asphalt pavement for small and large existing roadway sections and pavement delineation.

County Roads Dig-Outs, West

In September 2021, Amador County Transportation and Public Works Department hired George Reed to perform sections of pavement replacement on Sutter-Ione Road, Dave Brubeck Road, Jackson Valley Road, and Curran Road.  The project consisted of roadway excavation, placement and compaction of hot mix asphalt pavement, and pavement delineation.  Also, a culvert was replaced on Sutter-Ione Road.

Willow Creek Road Rehabilitation Project

In July 2021, Amador County Transportation and Public Works Department hired Vintage Paving for a grind and overlay project on Willow Creek Road.  The project began at approximate post mile 3.0 and ended at approximate Highway 16. 

Camanche Road Repair Project

In October 2020, Amador County Transportation and Public Works Department hired George Reed to perform reconstruction work on Camanche Road from Curran Road to Reservation Road.  The project included excavation of poor subgrade materials, placement of rock and fabric base, placement of hot mix asphalt pavement, and pavement delineation.

County Road Dig-Outs, Fiddletown Road

In October 2020, Amador County Transportation and Public Works Department hired Vintage Paving to perform sections of pavement replacement on Fiddletown Road.  The project began at approximate post mile 1.0 and ended at approximate post mile 6.5.  The project consisted of roadway excavation, placement and compaction of hot mix asphalt pavement and pavement delineation.

Lower Tonzi Road Culvert Replacement

In September 2020, County forces replaced two culverts located at approximately 0.25 miles east of Willow Creek Road on Tonzi Road.

Pioneer Creek Road Storm Damage Repairs

In November 2019, Pioneer Creek Road was repaired as a result of landside damage from severe winter storms in 2017.  This project included constructing a retaining wall, placing new embankment, and paving approximately 100 feet of Pioneer Creek Road to restore existing facility use.

County Road Dig-Outs, Buckhorn Ridge Road and Pioneer Volcano Road

In September 2019, large and small sections of existing roadway along Buckhorn Ridge Road and Pioneer Volcano Road were removed and replaced.  The project consisted of roadway excavation, placement and compaction of hot mix asphalt pavement and pavement 

County Road Dig-Outs Project, Buena Vista Road and Stony Creek Road

In October 2019, large and small sections of existing roadway along Buena Vista Road and Stony Creek Road were removed and replaced.  The project consisted of roadway excavation, placement and compaction of hot mix asphalt pavement and pavement delineation.

 Hot Mix Asphalt Pavement Projects

The following roads received an asphalt overlay in 2019:

  • Curran Road:  Post mile 1 to Camanche Parkway North
  • Camanche Road:  Curran Road to Jackson Valley Road
  • Camanche Parkway North:  Lakeview Drive to Camanche Road
  • Jackson Valley Road:  SR 88 (west connection) to Lake Amador Drive

These projects consisted of a 2-inch hot mix asphalt pavement overlay, paving of side access points, and pavement delineation to match existing facility use.
